Managing for Results
Many elected officials, public managers, and
business and community leaders have proposed new ways of planning,
budgeting, and managing that will hold public officials accountable for
helping individual families and communities. This performance and
results based orientation incorporates a number of related efforts,
including (1) setting and clarifying goals, (2) redefining the missions
and policies of public agencies to further those goals, (3) allocating
public resources to support the goals, (4) marshaling support from the
private sector to achieve the goals, (5) developing targets and
measures to assess progress toward goals, and (6) holding public
agencies accountable for meeting goals. The components of performance
and results based management include:
