Managing for Results
Many elected officials, public managers, and business and community leaders have proposed new ways of planning, budgeting, and managing that will hold public officials accountable for helping individual families and communities. This performance and results based orientation incorporates a number of related efforts, including (1) setting and clarifying goals, (2) redefining the missions and policies of public agencies to further those goals, (3) allocating public resources to support the goals, (4) marshaling support from the private sector to achieve the goals, (5) developing targets and measures to assess progress toward goals, and (6) holding public agencies accountable for meeting goals. The components of performance and results based management include:
  • Performance and Results Based Planning (or strategic planning);

  • Performance and Results Based Budgeting;
  • Performance and Results Based Decision Making; and
  • Performance and Results Based Accountability.
In this collection we offer a comprehensive survey of resources that can help decision makers and others gain insight into performance and results based approaches.
